Smaills Beach is a small golden sand beach sheltered by rugged headland looking over a rocky island. Just a short distance from Dunedin’s city centre, Smails Beach is just next door to Tomahawk Beach and there are incredible views of both beaches from the top of the hill which separates them. From the top of the hill you can walk down past a series of viewpoints, some of which double up as car parks.
Local families frequent the beach on good days, and surfers brave the waves in safe conditions. At the bottom end of the beach you could try some discreet nude sunbathing. Smails Beach is further from the more populated areas of Dunedin, making it ideal for those seeking an experience without the crowds. Like many beaches around Otago, coastal wildlife take shelter in the area.
New Zealand fur seals and sea lions often bask on the rocks and in the sand. Be respectful of the wildlife by keeping your distance as encounters can be dangerous.
