A short distance away from village of Ouhans, it is the largest and probably the most beautiful spring in the Jura Mountains. After flowing through a long underground passage, the spring gushes forcefully out of a vast cave -60 m wide and 3 m- at the foot of a 106 m cliff.
A hiking trail starts at the spring, follows the steep gorges for 6 km, and reaches the village of Mouthier-Haute-Pierre.The village essentially divides into two parts: the upper part with the old village around the church, and the lower part with houses scenically spread along the banks of the Loue river and around the 16th century bridge across the Loue river.
The river Loue is one of many rivers that emerge from huge underground springs. Mouthier-Haute-Pierre in eastern France glows luminous with minerals. The river emerges from a great cave opening in the cliff side and tumbles into a large pool. You can climb up into the cave and explore the passageways inside, it is not unknown for people to take a little naked dip when the area is quiet.
