Lighthouse Beach is a small section of the Fire Island National Seashore adjacent to Robert Moses State Park. Officially recognized with signage, this beach had been used by naturists since the 1950s.
In February 2013, the Fire Island National Seashore announced its plans to enforce New York State's anti-nudity laws on Fire Island. The current situation is that the genitals must be covered and full nudity is not allowed. Since this ban if you travel 100 yards East of Robert Moses parking Field 5, you will still find naked people, mainly covered by their windbreaks! Walk up just past the lighthouse and the beach is near deserted so a much more discrete location to get as close to full nudity as possible or bare all if you are brave enough.
So while there are no longer 1,000s of people naked near the lighthouse on a sunny weekend, there are many people who are willing to take the risk of being prosecuted for sunbathing naked but they have spread out along the beach. In many ways the ban on social nudity hasn’t stopped it, just reduced the numbers and allowed the location to spread as there is no longer a marked area. You need to be vigilant to avoid prosecution. Be sensible, discreet and look out for Rangers, keep away from the crowds and you should be OK but if caught be prepared for the consequences.
