Lake Willoughby, is situated in the town of Westmore in Orleans County, and is a glacial lake which measures about five miles long.A glacier carved a large U-shaped gap through the middle of a mountain, about 12,000 years ago. It opened up deep underground springs which feed the lake. This makes for the clearest, cleanest water one will probably ever see in a lake. While fed by cold springs, it warms up in summer.
There are three beaches on Lake Willoughby: On on the north and one on the south where conventional swimwear is customarily worn. The southwest cove is the only clothing-optional beach on the lake and also just happens to be the spot with the most spectacular view. The towering cliffs on each side are breathtaking.
Despite being such a deep lake, the water deepens gradually so you can wade in for up to 250 feet from shore before getting in above your neck. The large shallow area is ideal for small children. Some large rocks to sit on in spots where sandy beach is lacking, great for sunbathing.
There's a hiking trail back in the woods forking off from the beach trail that takes you up close to the left cliff and many have enjoyed this 45 minute hike nude.
