In Germany, nudism is known as Freikoerperkultur (FKK), Free Body Culture and public nudity is not illegal but may be regulated by local authorities.

Germany's passion for nudism finds its origins in late-19th-century when stripping off and sunbathing was seen as a possible cure for TB and rheumatism. The first nude beach was established on the island of Sylt in the 1920s and attracts many naturists and lovers of nature today.

Many designated Freikörperkultur areas exist, especially in the former East Germany, where nudism remains more widespread than in the west.

Today Germans are typically the most commonly seen nationality at European nude beaches. Back home, there are many nudist camping areas to be found along the coast and along the lake shores of the former GDR.

Most FKK beaches on the coast will have signs indicating textile-free zones. After passing these signs, visitors will need to disrobe immediately to avoid being reprimanded by the lifeguards who also enforce the rules. There are beaches, lakes parks and open spaces suitable for the practice of nudism. The attitude is: all beaches are nude beaches until somebody complains.

Families especially like to spend their leisure time in naturist areas. Sauna bathing is also generally practised in the nude. Many public swimming pools have clothing optional sessions and naturist sunbathing areas.
