Summary:
I lived on the Awhitu peninsula a number of years and would free hike from Hamiltons gap up to the heads when the tides were right. The cliffs offer no escape from an incoming tide so you really need to know what you’re doing to attempt the walk safely.
As anyone living in Auckland will know, West Coast beaches have lethal currents, rips and conditions. You can swim here if you’re a strong swimmers with others.
It’s a spectacular location with black sands. Particularly near sunset with golden reflections of pools of water on the beach.
It’s not technically a nudist beach, but its remoteness lends itself to being able to walk here for hours without seeing another soul.
It’s technically illegal to drive on all but a few designated beaches in NZ. Sadly people ignore this to the detriment of the natural environment.
