Whale Beach is the last of a series of secluded beaches accessed off of Highway 28 on the east shore of Lake Tahoe. Whale Beach is also known as Black Sand Beach. It is a popular and scenic 100 yard beach that can be reached from the Secret Harbor Parking area.
Its name comes from a protruding rock in the bay that appears to look like a sperm whale bursting from the water. This area has also been known as Black Sand Beach because of the dark color of the sand. It is considered a clothing-optional area. Whale beach is reported to have better sand, and be more secluded than the popular Secret Cove beach (located just along from Whale Beach).
