Situated on the western coast of Portugal (between Lisbon and the Algarve) lies the town of Vila Nova de Milfontes, a peaceful laid back village on one of the least visited coastlines of Portugal; with vast stretches of wild and deserted beaches.
The Praia das Furnas beach is a blue flag beach with golden sand which lies on the opposite bank to Vila Nova da Milfontes, on the mouth of the Mira River.
It is visited by naturists who enjoy a feeling of solitude. Half of the beach opens onto the Atlantic Ocean while the other half faces the River Mira.
This coastline has a rugged non-developed feeling and is popular with families but there are strong tidal currents both on the riverside and the sea-facing side which also make it a great destination for surfing and bodyboarding, it can also suffer from strong winds.
