As part of Naturist World Awareness Month - March 2026 - we thought it would be interesting to have a topic that looked at the wider aspects of the environment in general. Do feel free to link back to naturism if a subject/idea fits though.
This topic is primarily to share some facts and thoughts around the environment. It can be a touchy subject so lets keeps in friendly - something we ANW-ers are very good at.
Let's highlight some facts, figures and information that others may not have considered.
It doesn't always have to be doom and gloom - maybe some information on positive movements in the right direction.
Is there some misinformation that needs considering that you would like to share? Or just frustrations on how we are going wrong?
Are the good answers that we could put into practise as individuals? Or maybe initiatives that need to be taken on a government, national, international scale?
Let's make this topic a big melting pot of thoughts about the whole subject - good, bad and ugly.
What always amazes me is that there are some subjects that seem to never be discussed. We have gone through changes of direction towards plastic straws, plastic bags and "short-life" lightbulbs. Yet there are everyday household items that continue to be used without the debate really being taken up on a grand scale.
Something that bemuses me to get the ball rolling is the situation with disposable nappies/diapers. An estimated 167 billion are produced world wide every year. These single-use products, which take hundreds of years to decompose, result in over 300,000 nappies being incinerated, sent to landfill, or polluting the environment every minute! A single baby may use between 4,000 and 6,000 nappies before being potty trained. The industry uses 248 million barrels of crude oil annually. Disposable nappies take approximately 300-500 years to decompose in landfill sites. Because they are largely composed of plastics, they do not break down quickly. These nappies have been produced for 75 years so logically almost every disposable nappy ever used still exists in some form today!
So why are we not looking at changing the way these are made and enforcing big manufacturers to do this? We used greener alternatives - but more importantly our boys spent a lot of time naked and through experience lost the need to wear nappies very young.
This is just one subject we could chat about here. Tampons and pads are a similar topic, if someone wants to share any data that would be great. Greener versions of these exist too. I have not used any in years. Using a "moon cup" instead. Not only helping the environment and my pocket - but also very naturist friendly!
