A large, flat, sandy wild beach 1 mile west of Smiths Point Suffolk County Park on Long island NY
Fire Island National Seashore (FINS) is under the jurisdiction of the US federal government park service that has no regulations regarding being naked on the beach, however it is not an official clothing optional beach and you do run the risk of being given a citation for public nudity, however slight. In practice the rangers protocol is to inform and educate.
In total FINS is 26 miles long but it is not continuous and is broken up by inlets. Anywhere starting from 1 mile west of the rangers station is a good spot to take up some beach as you will see the naturists spaced out about 100m apart in that area. It is big enough and quiet enough to be enjoyed respectfully by naturists.
The closest toilets are at the adjacent county park which is strictly clothing required. There is ample parking at the county park. They charge a parking fee in season (Memorial day to Labor day) after 9 am and before 5 pm. There is a snack bar at the county park that has excellent seafood, ice cream, and alcoholic beverages. On the weekends they also have a live band. Unfortunately anything at the county park requires clothing.
We suggest naturists head to the west most tunnel that provides access to the beach from the parking lot. Walk to the right (west) for at least 1 mile to find the beginning of the clothing optional area.
Note:
Since hurricane Sandy destroyed the dunes at one of the Fire Island naturist beaches in 2013 the rangers have been enforcing the NY state laws against nudity on all of Fire Island beaches due to complaints. The former nude area near Smiths Point is about a mile west of the main beach (to the right when facing the water), This beach is a wild beach with no access road behind the dunes that would introduce someone accidentally observing a naked person driving by. You can still get nude there but you have to keep an eye out for the rangers driving down the beach a couple times a day. Very few to no gawkers walking down the beach. Most people you encounter are friendly and accepting. Most naturists put up privacy screens.
