I suppose I have already added some thoughts through Anna's quote above but I would like to add some more if I may.
Thanks to everyone for the thoughts they have shared so far. I love the way this is going. It is lovely to be praised for the work we have done in creating ANW and the work we do every day, but it is even more valuable when the praise has such a depth of meaning, feeling, understanding and shared passion. ANW is so much more than simply a website created by two people who actually care about the websites integrity. It really is a community.
In naturist terms we worry about the decline of popularity in landed club usage. In general social terms we worry about the decline in local communities. Strangers living next door to strangers. When I was a child I knew everyone, I knew that if I misbehaved a local "aunt" or "uncle" would either tell me off direct or pass it on to my parents. There was a safety in that knowledge. I could be out playing all day with friends and although we had great adventures and fun, it always felt safe and controlled. It wasn't that danger didn't exist them, it was just recognised as being unlikely. Adverts like "Charley Says" would warn us of not going off with strangers, squirrels and badgers would teach us to be careful when crossing the road. (Here's is a little irony Jimmy Saville taught us to wear seat belts and Rolf Harris gave us learning to swim advice - such kind, protective, supportive role models!) Accidents did happen - I had a friend who dived from a kitchen stool into a blow up paddling pool placed on slabs - then spent three months with his arm in plaster. Some one down our road killed his wife, and then lead various adults (including my father) on a hunt around the neighbourhood for the killer. He was arrested the next day. But in general we had a community. I was on the tail end of that. The local working men club ran coach excursions to the seaside, people seldom moved, when they did they were missed, and their replacements welcomed with open (but cautious) arms. By getting to know people, you got to decide whether to trust them, and mostly the result was trust. The oddballs who were unpleasant, or even possibly a concern, were seen as such and not given the space to do harm, because the community was stronger through connectivity.
ANW represents that, and as has been mentioned above, the bigger we become, the stronger we can become, because the bigger our communal voice is and the more obvious our intention is. We police ourselves but also add more good apples to the barrel, bad apples stand out but also do less harm. We just need to make sure we never allow the rot to spread.
One of the things Anna and I have come across over and over again since sharing naturism together, is the complaint that naturism has a hierarchy. Concerns of elitist and dictatorial behaviour. Little Hitlers running naturist clubs, members of boards acting like pontiffs sitting in high command, seemingly more interested in their position than naturism and naturists, an idea that we are all equal but some are more equal than others, and a general lack of concern for where naturism is going. Naturism isn't a political party placed in power through fake promises, only interested in what personal and financial success can be achieved in the next four years. Naturism is about humanity, we are part of an huge arc of experience, and we have no right to damage it in an attempt to look good, earn a quick buck, behave in a bullying or condescending way, or generally be self serving. We should never place the needs of ourselves or a select few over naturism and the naturist community. For many years we have read and heard of countless people who have felt pained by this negative behaviour within naturism. And we see it all the times egos being placed above naturism.
If ANW is a community, or a club, there is no doubt that Anna and I have a position of "importance" in as much as we created ANW in the first place, we have to police it, and ultimately the pressure falls on us for its continued existence. But I hope that we always do this for the overall good of the community, that we only present and protect the rules to ensure ANW continues on target, and that we serve the community well and do not distance ourselves from a level of equality within the community. We do not want an ivory tower, we want to be in the sun on the beach enjoying naturism with the whole community. I really hope that this comes across, and I feel that this is part of what keeps the community valid and respectful. Some choose to be annual and life members, some choose to write blogs, share on the activity feed every day, create albums, send in entries to interactive projects, record podcasts and so forth, some have been with us since the ANFamily blog and others joined yesterday, Anna and I have our various jobs to perform each and every day, but who ever we are and however we get involved we have an equality within naturism and equal options to embrace, be embraced, respect or disrespect the community. I think it is that tradition human value of being in a protective and living community that keeps ANW moving and growing with relevance.
If I had any wish for naturism it would be that all national bodies, clubs, venues, websites and other opportunities could stay true to the idea of nurturing naturism for the whole world to enjoy forever in a natural and equal way. I think we have achieved that on the internet, which is no simple task, so there is no reason why it cannot be achieved in all aspects of naturism. We all just have to care enough to try, and be willing put asides our egos for the greater good. There is an idea that the golden age of naturism has gone, just like the golden age of our local neighbourhoods, but we only lose things when we stop trying and get distracted. Too much of naturism today has lost direction, but that is because some silly, greedy, self serving people have decided to create new paths. Naturism had its own natural path and that is a path we should all be travelling, not forcing naturism onto designed paths with individual goals in mind. These paths have separated and weakened naturism, they have lost naturists along the way and put people off joining (too many paths offer a lack of clarity). I think ANW works because our community is walking the natural path of naturism rather than trying to one we have designed for our own glory or needs.
